What do I need to take PCAT?
A desktop or laptop computer, a current browser, a microphone and a stable internet connection. The environment check before the test confirms all of them, so you find out what to fix before any time is counted.
Can I use a smartphone or tablet?
No. PCAT can only be taken on a desktop or laptop computer running Windows or macOS. The Speaking section records your voice through the microphone, and the answer screens are designed for a computer-sized display, so smartphones and tablets are not supported and are not covered by our testing. You can read this site, sign in and check your results on a phone, but you cannot start a test or buy credits from one. When you are ready to take the test, open eltpcat.com on a computer.
Which browsers and operating systems work?
The current version of Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Safari, on Windows or macOS. The test records audio with the browser's built-in recording API, in whichever format your browser supports (WebM or MP4), and the environment check confirms this before the test starts. Firefox can record, but it is not covered by our testing, and we do not recommend it for a scored attempt. The test runs entirely in the browser; there is nothing to install.
What hardware and settings do I need?
A microphone is required — built-in or external, either is fine — because the Speaking section records your answers, and the environment check confirms that it is actually picking up sound. Speakers or headphones are needed for the Listening section. A camera is optional: you can take the test with it off, and if you turn it on, video of the session is recorded and your score report notes that a camera was used. JavaScript and cookies must be enabled, because sign-in and the test depend on them.
What if my connection drops?
You can resume the same attempt within 24 hours at no extra cost; after 24 hours the session expires and a new credit is required. The test plays audio, uploads your recordings and keeps a continuous connection to our servers, so use a stable connection and avoid places where mobile reception is unreliable or the network is restricted. The environment check confirms that you are online before the test begins.
